Greetings to you in the most precious Name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
The apostle John was a close disciple of Jesus. He was the only person to be with the Lord till the point of his death when all the other disciples fled. This gospel was written after all the other gospels.
And here we find a lot of things which are not recorded in the other gospels whether it was the miraculous signs or the teachings of the Lord. We find long discourses of the Lord with the disciples and also the Lord’s answer to many other Jews. Again, this is the gospel we have two chapters after the resurrection of the Lord.
We all know from all gospels that Peter denied the Lord for three times. Later, he repented and greatly regretted of the act that he had committed. Here Jesus’ question to Peter was “Do you love me ?”Do you love me more than all the others?” Peter was hurt at the third time and answered, “ You know everything and you also know that I love you.”
Jesus’ answer to him was very simple but with a great responsibility. He first told him to tend the lambs. The lambs indicates the children. Peter was a senior disciple in age and the Lord delegated him first with the responsibility of the lambs. In the churches, we have people with different age groups but first care is for the lamb. As the children are so receptive, a special care for them will make them magnificent with the acquisition of the word of God and pave them a way to grow in grace.
The second and the third things are about the sheep that could refer to the youth and the adults of the church. The adults have a greater responsibility in the church in its growth and evangelism. Therefore the Lord in interested about the sheep. We see that Peter with the team of adults and youngsters would prosper the church for the glory of the Lord is foretold here.
Later, Jesus told something in a way Peter would embrace his own death though it would be painful and gruesome. In the beginning of the ministry, the Lord used to call Peter as a rock (Later that thousands could be saved and through him many miracles would happen and even his shadows could raise the sick. Acts 5:14 – 16.)
He was also speaking so powerfully with the members of synagogue and argued , “What is good - To obey men’s voice or the Lord’s command?”Acts 4 :19.
Peter was old and when he was handed over the Romans, he embraced the cross, not in the way Jesus was crucified, but upside down because he did not count him worthy to die like Jesus.
John the Baptist once said that He should increase and I decrease and Peter demonstrated it. Now the question of the Lord is “Do you love me than all the others?”
Prayer:
Loving Lord we thank you for sending Lord Jesus Christ. Help us to love with all our heart, soul and mind and to see Jesus increased in us. In the Name of the Lord we pray. Amen.
