For this lesson design, I aimed to create an activity that combines writing with digital creativity, allowing students to make meaningful connections between text and visuals. I chose Canva AI as the central tool because it enables students to transform abstract concepts, such as mood and tone, into concrete and visual representations. When students draft their stories in Google Docs and then create a book cover in Canva, they move beyond simple comprehension and apply their understanding in a creative and memorable way. This design encourages deeper learning while maintaining an engaging activity.
One of my goals was to address the needs of diverse learners. By including word banks, sentence starters, and opportunities for voice typing, I support students who struggle with writing or who are still developing English proficiency. At the same time, honors and advanced learners are extended opportunities to create multiple covers or write a designer’s reflection explaining their visual choices. In this way, the activity remains inclusive because every student can participate meaningfully at their own level of readiness.
Digital citizenship is another focus of this lesson. Students are reminded that Canva AI provides copyright-free content; however, we must still practice respect and responsibility when creating and sharing work online. We discuss how to give positive and constructive feedback to peers, and we emphasize that all design choices should be appropriate and respectful. These conversations help students understand their responsibilities as digital creators.
Engagement is promoted through the combination of storytelling and design. Students enjoy seeing their stories come to life in a visual format, and they feel a sense of ownership when they share their covers with the class. The peer feedback process encourages collaboration and validates different perspectives. Inclusivity is fostered because students with different strengths can shine, whether through writing, artistic design, or discussion.
Overall, this lesson integrates technology in a purposeful way while also supporting literacy goals, digital citizenship, and learner engagement. It represents a balanced and learner-centered approach that I believe will help students grow as both writers and digital communicators.
