Soot

(StSt/nSt) Soot

Soot darkens the dorsal area of an animal, similar to the  effects of Pangare. Often this marking is a  gradual fade into the regular coloration of the pelt, but takes up more area than Saddle.

If the genotype carries or shows as Black base coat (Bb or BB), Soot is black to dark gray coloration and must be darker than the base coat color. Soot sits below Roan and Seal and is hidden beneath roan, showing only through cornspots or holes.

On lighter coats without black (Bb or BB), soot appears in shades of brown, dark tan, or darker than the base coat but not black. For example on White coats, it should be visually darker and desaturated in comparison to the base coat color.  For example, soot on White could be a dark brown, but not black or gray.

Soot should be a smooth blend or fade into the coat and sits generally below other markings.

(nSt) Single Allele and Double Allele
Dominant soot extends the range, covering near the entire tail, the upper portion of the neck and the head.

Single allele soot should not touch the head.

Variation:

Soot can have a slight nuance or fade at spots to show the underlying coat color.

• Soot sits below most markings and is a smooth gradient from the topline down.

• Soot's edge can be slightly shaped as long as it remains one connected piece, it should not have hard solid edge holes and should be well blended into the base coat.

• Soot can interact with Dapple to 'erase' holes in the soot like a sooty dapple horse.

• Soot is less visible on black bases and may not show at all, instead being 'carried'.
