Roan lightens and desaturates the base coat color with a combination of white hairs. It spreads downwards from the shoulders and back, and can sometimes spread to the tail and hindlegs.
Roan is not a solid white marking, it should be at a low opacity over all other colors.
(nRn) Single Allele
With a single allele carrier roan at most affects the ribs and back of an algolope and does not extend up the neck or tail.
(RnRn) Dominant
In double allele carrier of roan, the range is extended to the base of the head, legs and tail.
Edge:
Edges of Roan can be Blended or Textured, or a mix of the two.
Variation:
Roan can have small spots, streaks or small holes called 'Corn Marks', these are pigmented or darker marks on the white area of roan.
Roan is generally white overlay that lightens the coat or desaturates it to a pale color, it should not be saturated or tinted with a color nor pure white.
Roan is inspired by Roan in horses.
Sooty is hidden by Roan, but can display via cornmarks (erasing the white of roan to show the color below), this should be minimal and small marks smaller than the size of the eye.
Cornmarks should be rounded and spotlike, with maximum 1-2 streaks or line-marks. Cornmarks should not resemble scars as they are not scars on Algolope.
Examples: (minis below are not suitable references for ranges. They depict edge varieties, possible color options and shapes. See chart above for acceptable ranges.)
Roan can be Textured, Blended or a mix but should not be pure white. It should be a low opacity overlay.
In this example, pure white is used, while the edge is ok, this makes roan look like a white mark, which it is not. Opacity should be lowered or use a softer brush to not have 100% or appear white visually.
Example of pure white used, but opacity adjusted to be a white overlay. Roan whitens and desaturates the coat but does not actual make it white.
