Pairing Fonts

Create Illustrator File

  1. Open Adobe Illustrator and create a new "Letter" file.

    • Name your file "Last Name, Font Pairs"

    • Letter: 11" x 8.5"

    • Orientation: Horizontal

    • Adjust the units to be "Inches"

    • Artboards: 4

Save as Cloud File

  1. "File" > "Save as..."

  2. Name: "Last Name, Font Pairs"

  3. Make sure to save it as a Cloud file (there will be a cloud icon in your tab and ".aic" at the end).

Adjust Workspace

  1. Adjust your workspace (go to "Window" > "Workspace" > "Essentials Classic"

Create 4 Backgrounds

  1. In your "Layers" panel, rename your "Layer 1" to "Backgrounds"

  2. Click on the "Rectangle tool" in the left toolbar

  3. Click and drag to create 4 rectangles that cover each of your 4 artboards.

  4. Select one and double click the black square on the bottom of the left toolbar to open the "Color Picker"

  5. Pick a color for each background.

  6. Lock your background layer.

Create a Text Layer

  1. In the "Layers" panel, create a new layer by clicking the "+" and name it "Text"

Choose a Font Pair

  1. Go to: https://fonts.adobe.com/fonts/

  2. Sign in to Adobe

  3. Find a font. You can filter by tag, classification, etc. on the left side of the page.

  4. Once you find a font you like, click on it to open the font page. Scroll down until you find the "...font pairings" area.

  5. Once you find a pair that you like, click the slider circle to the right so it turns blue to activate.

Add Text

  1. Use the Type Tool to create a new text box. Type a title word that describes or relates to your font choice.

    • minimum size: 100 pt.

    • Highlight your text and click "Character" at the top and type in the name of the main font you chose.

  2. Use the Type Tool to create a second text box. Find a paragraph of text about your title word and copy and paste it into the text box

    • minimum size: 24 pt.

    • Highlight your text and click "Character" at the top and type in the name of the other font you chose.

    • Click "Paragraph" at the top next to "Character" and uncheck "Hyphenate"

  3. Use the Type Tool to create a third text box. Copy and paste the font name and designer name for both fonts

    • minimum size: 12 pt.

    • This should be in the font that is the same as your font for the paragraph.

Repeat for each artboard

  1. Choose a new font pair and add text for each of the 3 remaining artboards.

SAVE AS .AIC AND .PDF

  1. Go to "File" > "Save" to make sure to save your .aic file (if it is grayed out then it is already saved).

  2. Go to "File" > "Save As..."

  3. Choose "On your computer"

  4. Click "Creative Cloud Files" folder on the left menu

  5. Name: "Last Name, Font Pairs"

  6. Click "Save"

  7. Click "Save PDF"

  8. Once you save as a .pdf, exit out of Illustrator. (If you need to edit again and resave, make sure to edit your .aic file and re-save as a .pdf.)

Turn in to Canvas

  1. Turn in your .jpg file on Canvas in the "Font Pairs" assignment.
