Drawing & Type poster

Project Brief

Create a poster with a line drawing, text (one font), and only 2 or 3 colors. Your chosen font and colors should relate to your drawing and overall theme of your poster. The words can be in any language.

Look at Examples

  1. Look through the Google Slides to see examples of posters with drawings and text.

  2. Think about what you want to make your poster about.

  3. Think about if you like any of the example color combinations.

Drawing and Type Poster Examples

Choose a Drawing

  1. Find a drawing online that you want to trace or use as a reference image.

  2. If you want it printed so you can trace it:

Draw with pencil

  1. Get a blank piece of paper.

  2. With a pencil, draw your image either by:

    • Looking at your image on your computer

    • or by tracing a printed copy

  3. Keep the lines simple and don't shade or create texture.

Trace over with Marker

  1. Using a dark marker, trace over your pencil drawing.

  2. Erase any pencil marks.

Take a Photo of Your Drawing

Either:

Copy Illustrator Template

  1. Go to the Drawing and Type Poster Template

  2. If you aren't already signed in to Adobe, click "Sign in" in the top right corner.

  3. Click "Copy to Files"

  4. Open the Creative Cloud desktop app.

  5. Right-click on the file and click "Rename"

    • "Last Name, Drawing and Type Poster"

  6. Right-click and click "Open"

Adjust Your Workspace

  1. Adjust your workspace (go to "Window" > "Workspace" > "Essentials Classic"


Import Image of Drawing

  1. Click the "Drawing" layer in the "Layers" panel.

  2. Open your "Downloads" folder in "File Explorer"

  3. Click, hold, and drag your image onto Illustrator.

Image Trace Tool

  1. With your image selected, click "Image Trace" in the top left.

  2. Click "Expand"

  3. Right-click on your image and click "Ungroup"

Delete White Background

  1. Click on a white part of the drawing.

  2. Click "Select" > "Same" > "Fill Color" to select all the white parts of the image.

  3. Click "Delete" or "backspace" or "Ctrl" + "X"

Regroup Drawing

  1. Select all the parts of your drawing.

  2. Right-click and click "Group"

  3. In the "Layers" panel, lock the "Drawing" layer.

Text - Write Words

  1. Make sure you're in the "Text" layer

  2. Click on the "T" in the left toolbar to activate the "Type tool"

  3. Click on your poster to create "Lorem ipsum"

  4. While "Lorem ipsum" is still highlighted, type your words. They can be in any language.

Choose Your Font

  1. Select all your text.

  2. Click on "Character" at the top and choose 1 font.

  3. The minimum text size is 24 pt.

  4. Make sure to keep your text within the margins (the blue lines around the edges)

Pick 2 or 3 colors

  1. Go to: https://coolors.co/f6c28b-5296a5-82ddf0

  2. Click the space bar to generate new colors.

  3. When you like a color, you can click the lock button and keep pressing the space bar for the others.

  4. The letters and numbers on the bottom are the HEX #s.

Adjust Your Text Color

  1. With your text selected, double click the gray square on the bottom of the left toolbar to open the "Color Picker"

  2. Type in the HEX # of the color you want to be the background.

  3. Once you're done editing the text, in the "Layers" window, click the empty square next to "Text" to lock the layer.

Adjust Your Background Color

  1. In the "Layers" window, click the lock next to the "Background Color" layer to unlock it.

  2. Click on the gray rectangle.

  3. Double click the gray square on the bottom of the left toolbar to open the "Color Picker"

  4. Type in the HEX # of the color you want to be the background.

  5. In the "Layers" window, click the empty square next to the "Background Color" layer to lock it.

Adjust Your Drawing Color

  1. In the "Layers" window, click the lock next to the "Drawing" layer to unlock it.

  2. Click on your drawing

  3. Double click the black square on the bottom of the left toolbar to open the "Color Picker"

  4. Type in the HEX # of the color you want to be the drawing.

  5. In the "Layers" window, click the empty square next to the "Drawing" layer to lock it.

Save as .aic and .pdf

  1. Go to "File" > "Save" to make sure to save your .aic file (if it is grayed out then it is already saved).

  2. Go to "File" > "Save As..."

  3. Choose "On your computer"

  4. Click "Creative Cloud Files" folder on the left menu

  5. Name: "Last Name, Drawing and Type Poster"

  6. Click "Save"

  7. Click "Save PDF"

  8. Once you save as a .pdf, exit out of Illustrator. If you need to edit again and resave, make sure to edit your .aic file and re-save as a .pdf.

Turn in to Canvas

  1. Turn in your .pdf file on Canvas in the "__" assignment.
