Design Pre-thesis 2 | Urbanism
Bukit Nanas is a small hill in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, at Jalan Ampang. It contains the only virgin rainforest that remains in Kuala Lumpur's heart. The Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve is open to the public in a city center primarily for jungle trekking. A number of notable buildings, such as the landmark Kuala Lumpur Tower, were built to boost the economy with a rapid development in the city center. Because of the development of the modern era in Kuala Lumpur, an enormous revolution of its own has been experienced by the industrial revolution affecting the architecture industry.
Using new materials and industrialized production methods created plenty of architecture with new function typologies. Many architectural projects have been built as monuments, and the public gradually come to see architecture as a profession that has created symbols that reflect power and wealth. It causes the forgotten of the essential role of modern architecture to reflect and bring pleasure to the needs of people. The purpose of this study is to reconsider public architectural design in order to develop a new design process to achieve an innovative new public library type.
This design proposal explores how architecture integrates with its natural context by designing this building, as well as the effect on the spatial experience of people. By experiencing these spaces, it is possible to address the spiritual needs of the public. In addition, the relationship between the Bukit Nanas landscape and the surrounding area will emerge without any boundaries and spread to the architecture to make the entire environment as user-friendly and sustainable. As last, by allowing their needs to dominate the building, a new type of public library should meet the needs of users.
