Design Pre-thesis 1 | Social Culture
A walk through Kampung Baru reveals the preservation of a subsistence-based Malay lifestyle, widespread with shrubbery, backyard agriculture and small-scale animal farming (Alhabshi, 2012). The preservation of socio-cultural heritage of Kampung Baru is important in the development of this design proposal. Therefore, the spirit of traditional village lifestyle – a close-knit community surrounded by abundance green open spaces and gardening areas – has been implemented into design proposal. The concept is believed to benefit both elder and younger generations of Kampung Baru. Finally, the design of this ‘agritecture’ housing has response to the site issues and by exploring the role of architecture in strengthening community interaction for future urban ‘Malay Culture’.
