Design Pre-thesis 1 | Social Culture
Kampung Medan is situated in Petaling Jaya. The area is considered as a strategic place to stay due to its proximity to Kuala Lumpur and Shah Alam. Previously, there was mining activities near the Kampung Medan. But the existence of the squatter settlements at this area has no connection with the activities. The squatter settlements in Klang Lama existed because of the job opportunities offered in the city of Kuala Lumpur especially in the industrial sectors. But the higher cost of living in the city forced some people to explore an empty land and building settlements outside Kuala Lumpur. In Kampung Medan, there were 7 other ‘Kampung” as settlements and was occupied majority by Malay settlers. Only one ’kampung’ known as Kampung Gandhi was settled by Indian settlers. The impact of the squatter settlements in the Petaling Jaya Selatan (PJS) area especially in Kampung Medan faced slow development growth as compared to other parts of Petaling District as a whole.
