Design Pre-thesis 1 | Social Culture
Streetscape plays an important role in generating the imageability of a sustainable Kampung Baru, as it helps the place to success and become tourist attractions. As of today, poor design of urban streetscape has led to poor social interactions among the community of Kampung Baru. These include lack of social spaces, green spaces, narrow sidewalks with poor facilities, uncomfortable environment and illegal road parking which adds to the chaotic experience of pedestrian . Thus, the aim of this design proposal is to solve these streescape problems in order to revive the socio-cultural value of the Malay culture – neighbourliness, social interaction among community and farming culture. Subsequently, the primary focus is to provide an urban public building which acts as a catalyst for social interactions and provide proper access for pedestrians. A research centre that has abundace of social spaces is proposed. Located at the entrance of Kampung Baru, this building has successfully functions as a landmark which adds onto the liveability of the streescape. The research concludes the importance of the proposed building to conserve and promote socio-cultural heritage and identity of Kampung Baru.
