An Interactive Media Design Aimed at Fostering Inquisitive Thinking among
Low-income Filipino Children Aged 7-9 Years Old

Maco Culajara

Children are one of the most significantly affected demographic groups during the COVID-19 pandemic. Until now, their whereabouts are limited to the four corners of their homes which has negatively affected their physical, mental, and social development. One of the most important traits that they are missing out on learning due to this setup is inquisitive thinking—a set of skills that includes questioning, exploration, investigation, problem solving, and construction of new knowledge. This study investigated the problem of fostering inquisitive thinking among Filipino children aged 7-9 while staying at home. In an in-depth interview conducted with the primary caregivers of the target audience, the following key findings about the state of the kids’ inquisitive behaviors before and during the pandemic are raised: (1) altered behavior and activities of children, (2) low income families reported more difficulties and negative experiences in online learning, and (3) exhausted and preoccupied parents dealing with their kids 24/7. The researcher then crafted a solution in a form of a mobile application that encourages inquisitive thinking among children and at the same time addresses the issues faced by their families.

Listoo follows the American Library Association’s Standards for the 21st Century Learner that simplifies the inquiry process. The THINK activities consist of scenarios, short quizzes, and hypothesizing on a particular scientific topic that could pique children’s curiosity. This part covers the first half of the scientific process which includes making observations, asking questions, and forming a hypothesis. The CREATE activities are the experiments that the children can do in real life. The SHARE section enables the children to express their learning and experiences—a space where they can draw, color, or take a picture of their observations and experiments.

Most of Maco’s works are greatly inspired by vintage story picture books but her curious mind loves exploring different styles, techniques, and media.
