The Design and Development of a Digital Visual Catalog of the Kalanay Pottery Complex for High School Students in Metro Manila

Chewi Crisologo

Earthenware ceramic tradition was at the core of pre-hispanic Filipino cultures; and apart from its irrefutable significance in anthropological studies, it now serves as a gateway to a deeper understanding of the manifestation of art in material culture. Among these traditions was the neolithic Kalanay Pottery Complex which was developed by early ceramic artists from separate communities. With the arrival of high-fired ceramics from Mainland Asia however, native pottery traditions fell out of favor. Fortunately in the 1970s, artists from different fields simultaneously experimented with clay and developed the local contemporary ceramic industry as we know it

today. Though ceramics is already generally considered an art form, there is still a need to inspire young Filipino artists to consider ceramics as a medium of expression and contribute to the development of local techniques, formulations, and methods of clay production. The visual solution to this case must engage the target audience to appreciate Philippine Ceramic Arts as a manifestation of Philippine artistic identity and seek information on careers in ceramic arts; and must communicate that Philippine Ceramic Arts needs artists to carry on the spirit of

Philippine Ceramics in its contemporary recurrence. A catalog highlighting the shared spirit of the Kalanay Pottery Complex and Philippine Contemporary Ceramic Arts was developed and was composed of 18 individual short-form videos ranging from 30-60 seconds long; starting from a general introduction to the pottery tradition and ending with a series of featured successful Filipino ceramic artists.

The catalog can be accessed on Tiktok by searching @kalanaypotterycomplex.
