A Study Exploring the User Interface Design of a Mobile Application as a Remote Learning Supplement for Teaching Students in Palawan about Philippine Biodiversity

Biodiversity is the variety of living organisms found on Earth. Out of all of the areas in the Philippines, the island of Palawan has the greatest concentration of biodiversity that needs to be conserved. Many of these amazing species in the country are being threatened by environmental issues such as global warming, deforestation, pollution, and poaching. Not many Filipinos are aware of other species in our country, however, they do see the importance in environmental conservation. It is important that the knowledge and awareness of Filipinos students of our biodiversity be raised so that they may grow up to become conservators of our plants and animals. A proposed visual communication solution for this is a mobile video game application as a supplemental learning tool for students, ages 11-16, in Palawan.

The video game is an open world Role Playing Game where players go on different quests in order to learn about the flora and fauna of Palawan. Not only do they learn about biodiversity but also about environmental and socio-political issues connected to these. Its 3D graphics were inspired by Genshin Impact and gameplay from PokemonGO. Players explore the island of Palawan and use a scanner in order to learn information about the organism and view it in life size through Augmented Reality on their camera. There is an in-game calendar and clocked modelled after the real world but faster. This allows users to sight animals during a particular time of day or flowers bloom during a certain season.

Liezelle Awa is a girl in love with all the beautiful things in life. She wishes to be able to create art that would show people the beauty of the world and being alive. She wants to make things that will touch everyone’s life and change the world for the better.
