123 AROUND ME! LEARNING MATH WITH DRAWING

A Study on the Role of Drawing Skills on the Mathematical Problem-Solving Skills of Preschoolers in Metro Manila

Caleb Macion

Doodles and Digits was a research conducted to explore the different roles of art, particularly the skill of drawing, on math problem solving skills of preschool children, and it was revealed in the earlier parts of research that using drawing in math can serve as visual representations with lasting memory recall, simplifications to complex concepts, and familiarization. These were however found to be affected majorly by what they’re exposed to, especially with what kinds of materials are provided to them by their parents, which led to the creation of 123 Around Me.

The redesign of the math workbook format was created in a way that puts a balance to both written and drawn activities, this way children will be able to tap into the roles of drawing even when they have yet to develop such skills, because it will be set up in a manner that progresses from start to finish. This is seen in the format of practice and application pages, where they practice first writing the number and drawing the object, before moving into the application situations where they have to draw the equivalent number of objects to fit the scenario.

Caleb is a 22 year old designer and illustrator who enjoys stylizations of realistic scenes, and adding a more childlike and cartoon-esque appearance to mundane things. They are particularly fond of typography as well as layouting infographics ranging from advocacy work to more academic subjects such as this educational workbook.
