Design and Development of an Interactive Digital Picture Book on the Prevention of Bullying Among 4th- 6th Grade Students in Philippine Urban Schools: A Proposed Visual Novel

Rayn Manaloto

The subject matter of bullying in schools is not a new. The amount of research and materials, due to the prevalence of bullying cases (both locally and internationally), is overwhelming. However, thousands of bullying cases still happen in the Philippines schools every single month. This suggests that no matter how much research is done, it would be of no use if not communicated effectively. This thesis aims to gather reliable research and information, primary and secondary (both quantitative and qualitative) data within the Philippine socio cultural context, synthesize and analyze results, construct a theoretical framework based from that research, compose a logical creative plan based on the theoretical framework, and finally execute an output.

The creative plan has been directly influenced by the limitations caused by the worldwide pandemic, which pushed it to evolve into something digital, interactive, and more accessible. The output of this thesis is a visual novel, designed to discuss about bullying to students in a narrative form; creating simulations of common bullying cases that occur in typical Philippine urban schools. Getting a “good” or “satisfying” ending requires the player to make decisions that would allow communication with the other characters and hopefully would spark empathy and encourage them to apply what they’ve learned when dealing with a similar situation.
