PARALUMAN

A Study on the Design and Development of a Filipino-Illustrated Online Comics Anthology Based on Ancient Filipino Goddesses for Young Adults Aged 18-24 in Metro Manila

Sam Agrade

Comics, as a medium, is an accessible form of sequential art, and like most media, they are a reflection of society’s culture. Such a medium can be used to impart information and to create empathy among different social classes. Thus, this research aims to adapt select ancient myths from Filipino culture, which are oral in tradition, to a digital, online comic anthology in order to make it more accessible for a Filipino young adult audience through a portable device, especially during the COVID-19 crisis where people are encouraged to stay at home and avoid touching surfaces when possible to avoid the spread of the virus.

While media depicting ancient Filipino culture and mythology are growing in popularity, Philippine mythology is still considered an underappreciated field of study in social sciences and humanities, and the researcher wishes to enhance the audience’s appreciation and understanding of a few of our myths by creating a comic anthology that attempts to retell these stories as close to the original myths as possible.

Febby Samantha Agrade is a student in the University of the Philippines Diliman’s Bachelor of Fine Arts course and they major in Visual Communication, and they shifted from Computer Engineering to pursue their lifelong passion for art, specifically illustration. A fan of comics since childhood though unable to afford them, she compensated by illustrating her own comics in her spare time. This lack of access to the things they enjoy is one of the reasons why they wish to create a project such as Paraluman.
