As one of the activities commemorating the 60th Anniversary of the University of Mauritius, the Department of Economics and Statistics, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities organised a Roundtable discussion entitled "Financial Sector Development in Mauritius: Opportunities and Challenges in the Digital Era" which was held on Wednesday 23 July 2025 in the Lecture Theatre 2, New Academic Complex.
Dr Zeinab Jannoo led the organisation of this event and delivered the welcoming address.
UoM had the priviledge to welcome The Hon. Dhaneshwar Damry, Junior Minister of Finance as Chief Guest on Campus on that occasion.
Associate Professor I Ramlall delivered a Keynote presentation on the topic “Financial Sector Development in Mauritius: A Fin Tech Perspective”.
The roundtable discussion brought together esteemed experts, policymakers, industry leaders, and academics to explore the evolving landscape of Mauritius’ financial sector in the digital age. Key topics included: Digital transformation in banking and finance; Regulatory challenges and FINTECH innovations; Cybersecurity and financial inclusion and Mauritius’ role as a regional financial hub. The Roundtable ended with an open floor for questions and answers from the audience.
The Roundtable was a successful event whereby we had representatives from several companies such as NPCC, Maurice Strategie amongst others who were in attendance. The closing remarks were delivered by Associate Professor S Bundoo who attempted to link the financial sector inclusion in the development of Mauritius. We had students, and colleagues from the Department were also present to participate actively in the questions and answers session.
