UoM Goes Green for its 60th Anniversary!
Native Tree Planting Ceremony and Green Campus Campaign
Tuesday, 23 September 2025
Last week, on Tuesday 23 September 2025, the University of Mauritius launched a Native Tree Planting and Green Campus Campaign, organized mainly by the staff unions and led by the UoM Academic Staff Union (UMASU) at the Réduit Campus, marking its 60th Anniversary.
The event was honoured by the presence of:
Dr the Hon. Arvind Boolell, Minister of Agro-Industry, Food Security, Blue Economy & Fisheries;
Dr the Hon. Kaviraj Sukon, Minister of Tertiary Education, Science & Research;
Dr Louis Jean Claude Autrey, Chancellor of UoM.
Special thanks to our valued partners Bioculture (Mauritius) Ltd, Mauritius Wildlife Foundation, and National Parks & Conservation Services for making this initiative possible.
Before the planting ceremony, Assoc. Prof. Vincent Florens delivered an inspiring talk on Mauritius’ unique biodiversity and the urgent need to protect it.
His message was clear: controlling invasive species is crucial if we are to save our island’s rare native flora and fauna.
This initiative reflects UoM’s commitment to environmental integrity, biodiversity conservation, and sustainability alongside academic excellence.
