Celebrating 60 Years of Excellence!
The year 2025 marks a significant milestone for the University of Mauritius as we proudly celebrate our Diamond Jublilee! This landmark year is an opportunity to reflect on our rich history, celebrate our achievements, and look ahead with optimism and purpose.
We warmly invite our students, staff, alumni, and partners to join us in commemorating this remarkable journey over the next few months.
Milestones and Achievements
Established in 1965, the University of Mauritius began as an in-service training institution and has since evolved into the country’s premier public university. Over the decades, UoM has emerged as a trusted provider of higher learning, research, consultancy and policy dialogue, playing a key role in national development and regional cooperation. Since its creation, the University of Mauritius has offered quality tertiary education in a wide range of fields. We are also the first University to offer free full-time undergraduate degrees, thus providing access to tertiary education to all Mauritians.
Rooted in values such as respect, integrity, academic freedom, diversity, inclusion, social responsibility and institutional autonomy, UoM has overcome numerous challenges to remain the leading higher education institution of Mauritius. Apart from being the first choice for local students, UoM’s commitment to academic excellence attracts students from across the region and from the African Continent and beyond.
UoM has built a solid reputation in research and knowledge dissemination, hosting international conferences, workshops, and seminars that have positioned the institution on the global academic map. A testament to this progress is UoM’s inclusion in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings and the THE Impact Rankings - prestigious global benchmarks that recognise excellence in teaching, research, and contributions to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This international recognition reinforces our commitment to delivering high-quality education and impactful research that address both local and global challenges.
By adapting to the evolving technological landscape and strengthening its ties with both the Public Sector and the Industry as well as NGOs, the University continues to offer relevant and forward-looking programmes, aligned to the needs of the country. UoM’s contribution extends beyond academia. It has fostered a vibrant, inclusive community that values cultural diversity and continues to play a central role in addressing societal and environmental challenges through education, research, and community engagement.
UoM has expanded its academic reach and enhanced the quality of its programmes through strong international partnerships and collaborations. The extension of our services to the Indian Ocean region further reflects the University’s commitment to inclusive access to higher education.
We recognise that our people are our greatest asset. We remain dedicated to promoting the well-being and professional development of our staff members through continuous training and by providing a supportive environment that are central to this approach.
Today, the University of Mauritius remains the largest provider of tertiary education in the country. With over 75,000 awards conferred since its creation, UoM offers more than 180 taught programmes as well as research programmes leading to academic qualifications ranging from certificate to doctoral degrees, across its seven (7) Faculties, the Centre for Innovative and Lifelong Learning, and its three (3) Research Centres.
True to its motto “Scientia Salus Patriae”, UoM remains committed to putting knowledge at the service of the nation.
Vision for the Future: Strategic Plan 2024–2030
