A Medical Update talk titled “Managing the heart via the kidneys: Multidisciplinary Perspectives” was held on 13 September 2023 in ELT 2 at the UoM.
The talk included 4 speakers namely:
1: Professor S BROWN, Paediatric and Interventional Cardiologist, University of the Free State, South Africa.
2: Dr M Feizal TIMOL, Consultant Cardiologist, C [1] Care Clinic.
3: Dr Davy IP, Consultant Nephrologist, Ministry of Health and Wellness.
4: Dr D RAMLUGUN, Praticien Hospitalier, Chirurgie cardiaque adulte et pédiatrique, CHU Strasbourg, France.
Prof BROWN spoke about advances in the treatment of cardiac failure in children and the difficulties in diagnosing acute renal failure with cardiac lesions.
Dr TIMOL talked about the prevention of contrast-induced acute kidney injury, which occurs mostly when radiocontrast media is administered in arteries.
Dr Davy IP presented the nephrologist’s view on the management of patients with both cardiac and renal disease.
Dr RAMLUGUN talked about the perioperative considerations for the kidneys during cardiac surgery and on the importance of proper monitoring of hemodynamics.
The session was moderated by Dr Mehjabeen BEEBEEJAUN, Consultant Physician, Diabetologist & Endocrinologist in Mauritius.
