A Medical Update talk titled “What’s new in therapeutics” was held on 11 October 2023 at the UoM. 

The talk was delivered by Mr Sadeck VAWDA, MRPharms (UK), Pharmacist and General Manager at Unicorn (MSJ Limited)

Mr Vawda talked on the “Polypill” and its future in the management of cardiovascular diseases and diabetes as a medium to increase the adherence of patients to their treatment. He further described new drugs in the management of obesity and talked about Tirzepatide- the first GLP 1/ GIP agonist, a blockbuster in the treatment of diabetes. Discussions were also done about the potential role of psychedelic drugs in treatment-resistant depression.  

The audience was made aware of the current importance of drug repurposing or repositioning in the pharmaceutical industry and its efficiency compared to the classical new drug development. Finally, Mr Vawda presented a few newcomers in the treatment of various disorders such as glaucoma, vitiligo, puerperal depression and some forms of cancers.

The talk was organised by the Department of Medicine, FMHS in collaboration with the Medical Update group.
