On the 5th of July 2025, the Agricultural Society of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Mauritius, in collaboration with the Currimjee Foundation, successfully organised a large-scale endemic tree planting drive at the historic Citadel, Port Louis. Academic staff and students of the University of Mauritius planted 1,000 endemic plants, marking a significant step towards the restoration of the island’s rich but threatened biodiversity.
This initiative reflects the commitment of youth and academia to safeguard Mauritius’ unique natural heritage while addressing pressing environmental challenges such as deforestation, urbanisation, and climate change. Beyond its ecological impact, the drive also aimed to raise awareness about the importance of preserving endemic flora as a cornerstone of the nation’s identity and resilience.
By bringing together the energy of students, the guidance of academia, and the support of the private sector through the Currimjee Foundation, this event set a shining example of collaborative action for sustainability. The planting drive at the Citadel stands as a symbol of hope, conservation, and responsibility towards future generations.
