Information for Music Scholars
Scholarship Offers
We are delighted to offer, each year, up to three full music scholarships* to musicians entering Tiffin School Sixth Form.
*These may take the form of up to six 50% music scholarships should more than three deserving candidates apply.
These scholarships are open both to internal and external applicants i.e. to pupils continuing at Tiffin from Year 11 and pupils joining Tiffin from other schools.
A music scholarship offer is not an offer of a place at the school: all pupils must go through the normal application process to join Tiffin School Sixth Form. If successful, pupils holding music scholarship offers will become music scholars as they join the school.
Opportunities for Music Scholars
Each scholar will benefit from:
Free individual music tuition on the pupil’s chosen instrument (with a value equivalent to £1260 in total: £210 per term, supported by the Friends of Tiffin Music)*.
Membership of the School’s auditioned ensembles.
The opportunity to direct and accompany ensembles.
Preparation for university choral, organ and instrumental music scholarships.
*A 50% music scholarship will fund 50% of a pupil's music tuition fees for their chosen instrument (with a value equivalent to £630 in total: £105 per term, supported by the Friends of Tiffin Music)*.
Requirements of Music Scholars
Each music scholar is expected to have reached a high standard on his or her first study instrument or voice (equivalent to Grade 7 or higher) and make an exemplary contribution to the musical life of the school, including:
Regular participation in performances as an ensemble member and soloist.
Attendance at weekly ensemble rehearsals.
Leading other pupils in the preparation of rehearsal and performance spaces and equipment.
Prioritising their participation in co-curricular school musical activities over other co-curricular activities both within and outside school (please refer to the current music rehearsals timetable and music events calendar as a guide).
It is preferred, but not a requirement, that music scholars study A level music (this will be specified in a music scholarship offer).
Prospective music scholars who prefer not to make this commitment, as outlined in their music scholarship offer, are discouraged from accepting a music scholarship. This will not affect their application to the school nor their opportunity to participate in music at school: Tiffin School Music strongly encourages the participation of all musicians, regardless of age or experience.
Music scholars may receive individual music lessons within or outside school.
Music scholars wishing to receive individual music lessons within school should complete the Individual Music Lessons Enrolment form as soon as possible, allowing 2-4 weeks for their lessons to be arranged.
Payment of Music Scholarship Bursaries
Music scholarship payments will be made directly to the music scholar’s instrumental/singing teacher.
If the music scholar receives individual music lessons at school, at the beginning of each term the value of the scholarship will be paid to the visiting music teacher by the school, and the invoice for the scholar’s individual music lessons will be adjusted or waived accordingly.
If the music scholar receives individual music lessons outside school, at the beginning of each term the external music teacher should please invoice the school for the value of the scholarship. The scholar will be responsible for paying any outstanding lesson fees to their teacher.
The school administration fee will not be charged to music scholars for individual music lessons on this, their chosen instrument.
Payment of Choral Scholarship Bursaries
Choral scholarship payments will be made by the music department of St. Luke’s Church Kingston, who will provide choral scholars with more details of this arrangement.
If the choral scholar receives individual music lessons at school, at the beginning of each term the visiting music teacher will invoice St. Luke's Church for the value of the scholarship singing lessons.
If the choral scholar receives individual music lessons outside school, at the beginning of each term the external music teacher should please invoice St. Luke's Church for the value of the scholarship singing lessons.
Music Awards
For practical reasons, it is not possible to offer to all deserving musicians a scholarship
Talented musicians may instead be offered a music award.
This award offers many of the same benefits as the scholarship, but does not offer a bursary.
Music Scholars' Progress Review
The contribution of each music scholar to the musical life of the school will be reviewed termly.
If a scholar's contribution to the musical life of the school is not exemplary, his or her scholarship may be withdrawn.
