Teacher of Music (Now Closed)

Part time 0.6 or full time with another subject

The closing date for this vacancy has now passed

Required from September 2023

This is a great opportunity to join a friendly, dynamic school where all can thrive and staff are highly valued. Applications are invited from well qualified teachers for this exciting opportunity to teach music throughout the school, including GCSE and A level. The music provision at Tiffin is excellent and one of the many reasons for the school's outstanding reputation. Music is very strong at A level and GCSE, and large numbers of students separately take music lessons. This is a wonderful opportunity for an enthusiastic musician. The position is suitable for an ECT or a more experienced teacher.

Here are some of the key reasons Tiffin is a great School in which to work:

*A vibrant and friendly staff, with a diverse mix of teachers and associate staff: “an amazing school environment. Supportive and friendly staff. Incredible extra-curricular opportunities. An environment where learning for its own sake (rather than just for passing exams) is encouraged and fostered.” (current teacher)

*Very bright and able students who are motivated and eager to learn, in an environment of excellent behaviour: “as our son departs the school he certainly has an exceptional set of qualifications in his pocket, but he carries with him so much more from his time as a Tiffinian: a thirst for learning and an enquiring mind; a keen sense of self-identify; strong peer friendships as well as a bucket-full of happy memories from his schooldays.” (ex-parent)

*An opportunity to teach your subject to a high level: “as I depart for University I would be very grateful if you could pass on my thanks to all the            teachers who have helped and supported me over the last seven years and allowed me to make the most of all the fantastic opportunities I have been given.” (ex-student)

*A commitment to professional development

*A location close to Kingston town centre, and excellent public transport links to  Central  London, Tiffin is minutes away from the train and bus stations. We are close to Richmond and Bushy Parks, and the Surrey countryside. Our sports ground is beautifully situated with the River Thames and Hampton Court Palace very close by.

*Benefits include: season ticket loan/Cycle to Work scheme/salary advance scheme for a rental deposit/free on-site parking/enhanced maternity benefits/2 week Autumn half term holiday/fitness suite

“Tiffin is an outstanding school” – Ofsted 2007 and 2011. We have also recently been reviewed by The Good Schools Guide. Please see our website to read the review.

Closing date: 9am on Wednesday 24th May 2023.

Teacher of Piano and Music Theory (Now Closed)

Required from: January 2018

Closing Date: Monday 8th January 2018

Tiffin School wishes to appoint a talented and committed Teacher of Piano and Music Theory to teach pupils across the school’s age range (11-18). Experience of teaching jazz piano and/or an interest in preparing pupils for jazz piano exams would be advantages.  The teacher will engage pupils with suitable repertoire, prepare them for performances, coursework recordings and examinations, and report on their progress. Recognising that pupils’ success depends chiefly upon their playing-time outside lessons, the teacher will be persistent and creative in encouraging pupils to practise their instrument and perform to others.

Music is highly valued at Tiffin, a selective state grammar school for boys in Kingston-upon-Thames (0.3 miles from Kingston rail), with Tiffin pupils participating in over 40 musical performances each year. The Tiffin Boys’ Choir, one of the UK’s leading boys’ choirs, works regularly with London’s major orchestras and choruses, including the LSO, Philharmonia and Royal Opera. Last year, Tiffin pupils performed at venues including the RAH, RFH and Barbican, on national radio and on television, including BBC, ITV and Classic FM, and on tour.

This is a new post: the successful candidate will join a department of three established piano teachers. The start date and hours of work (currently estimated at 2-3 hours per week) will depend upon demand. This being so, the post would suit a local candidate, available to teach pupils each week for a small number of flexible hours.

The hourly rate is competitive (currently above the ISM recommended figure). Tiffin School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people, and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.  The successful candidate will be required to undertake an enhanced Disclosure and Barring (criminal record) check.
