The 2019 Tiffin Piano Competition final will take place at 7:00pm, Tuesday 5th November 2019 in the Walden Hall. All parents, pupils and friends are invited to attend. Admission is free of charge, seating is unreserved and no ticket is required to enter. The performances will end at approximately 8:30pm. The competition will be adjudicated by Nigel Hutchison. Mr Hutchison has performed internationally as both a solo artist and chamber musician. He has appeared with most of the UK orchestras in major venues such as the RFH, RAH and Barbican. His recording of Saint-Saens Carnival of the Animals with the LSO is critically acclaimed.

The preliminary round of the competition will take place between 12:40 and 1:45pm on Friday 18th October. Performers will be divided into two categories: senior, adjudicated by Mr Dalgleish in the Walden Hall, and junior, adjudicated by Mr O’Malley in Room 96. The six boys from each category who impress us the most will go through to the final. The order in which pupils enter the competition is the order in which they will be called to audition. For this reason, pupils should enter early to avoid disappointment (especially Year 7 pupils who must travel to Grist’s on Friday afternoon).

Competition requirements

Performers will be divided into two categories:

  1. Junior Category: open to all pianists grade 5 or below, pupils must perform a solo piano piece not exceeding four minutes in duration. Pupils will be encouraged to perform from memory but will not be penalized for performing with music.
  2. Senior Category: open to all pianists grade 6 and above, pupils must perform a solo piano piece not exceeding seven minutes in duration. Pupils will be encouraged to perform from memory but will not be penalized for performing with music.

Entering the competition

  • To enter the competition, pupils should complete the online entry form. (Pupils must be logged in to their Tiffin google account to enter).
  • The entry form can also be found by searching Tiffin School Music Department and following the ‘piano competition’ link on the department homepage.
  • The entry form will ask each pupil for his name, form, category (junior or senior), and the composer and title of his chosen piece.

  • The order in which pupils enter the competition is the order in which they will be called to audition. For this reason, pupils should enter early to avoid disappointment (especially Year 7 pupils who must travel to Grist’s on Friday afternoon).
  • Entries will be displayed in chronological order on the piano competition webpage, showing the order in which auditions will take place.
  • There is no limit to the number of entrants: the adjudicators will hear as many performers as possible between 12:40 and 1:45pm on Friday 18th October.
