The 2021 Tiffin Piano Competition final will take place at 7pm Tue 9th Nov 2021 in the Walden Hall. All parents, pupils and friends are invited to attend. Admission is free of charge, seating is unreserved and no ticket is required to enter. The performances will end at approximately 8:30pm.

The preliminary rounds of the competition will take place at 4pm Tue 19th Oct for pupils in Years 10-13, and 4pm Wed 29th Oct for pupils in Years 7-9. The order in which pupils enter the competition is the order in which they will be called to perform. Following their performance in the preliminary round, pupils may leave and travel home as normal. We anticipate that the final performances will be heard before 5pm.

Performers will be divided into two categories:

  1. Junior Category: open to all pianists grade 5 and below, pupils must perform a solo piano piece not exceeding four minutes in duration. Pupils will be encouraged to perform from memory but will not be penalized for performing with sheet music.

  2. Senior Category: open to all pianists grade 6 and above, pupils must perform a solo piano piece not exceeding seven minutes in duration. Pupils will be encouraged to perform from memory but will not be penalized for performing with sheet music.

The six pupils from each category who give the best performances will go through to the final.

  • To enter the competition, pupils should complete the online entry form (see below). Pupils must be logged in to their Tiffin google account to enter.

  • The entry form can also be found by searching Tiffin School Music Department and following the ‘piano competition’ link on the department homepage.

  • The entry form will ask each pupil for their name, year group, category (junior or senior), and the composer and title of their chosen piece.

  • If, later, a pupil wishes to change their choice of music, they should submit another entry form.

  • Entries will be displayed in chronological order on the piano competition webpage, showing the order in which preliminary round performances will take place.

  • There is no limit to the number of entrants: the adjudicators will hear as many performers as possible.

  • The closing date for entries will be Monday 18th October.

4pm Mon 18th Oct: Closing Date

  • Competitors must submit their entries before Monday 18th Oct.

4-5pm Tue 19th Oct: Preliminary Round for Years 10-13

4-5pm Wed 20th Oct: Preliminary Round for Years 7-9

  • Competitors wait in room 88. They will be called in turn to perform in the Walden Hall.

  • The order in which pupils enter the competition is the order in which they will be called to perform.

  • The competitor who is next due to perform may warm up on the piano in Room 88.

  • Other competitors may warm up in other music rooms, but must return to Room 88 before it is their turn to perform.

  • Competitors bring with them a quiet activity to complete (e.g. homework) whilst they wait.

  • Following their performance, competitors may leave and travel home as normal.

  • In the following days, the adjudicators will publish the names of the 12 pupils (6 senior and 6 junior) invited to perform in the competition final.

Tue 9th Nov: Competition Final

3-6:30pm Finalists may travel home as normal or wait in Room 88 where they may eat a packed tea.

4:30-6:30pm Finalists may warm up in the Walden Hall and in other rooms in the music department.

6:30pm Doors open to audience members

6:55pm Finalists take their seats in the Walden Hall.

7:00pm Competition begins. Pupils come from their seats to perform.

8:30pm approx. Competition ends. Parents and pupils travel home.
