About the Friends of Tiffin Music (FoTM)
Some studies show that independent school fees have risen by more than 500% since the 1990s. At the same time, the government requires state schools to educate your sons, grandsons and their peers for a small (and ever-decreasing) fraction of this cost.
For years, musicians at Tiffin School have outperformed musicians at many independent schools. Tiffin musicians are regularly invited to work with London’s major orchestras and choruses, including the LSO, Philharmonia and Royal Opera, performing at venues including the RAH, RFH and Barbican. Last year they appeared on national radio and on television (BBC, ITV and Classic FM), and have performed on tour in Europe, China and Australasia. A remarkable number of Tiffin pupils have received music scholarships to study at top universities, including Cambridge and Oxford.
This success reflects the ambition and dedication of these pupils, their parents, and staff. To be the best requires all parties to go the extra mile. We wish to continue to offer Tiffin pupils these exceptional opportunities but, as the gap between independent and state school funding continues to widen, we fear that state educated pupils will be left behind. As state funding increasingly provides only a basic education, excelling in a wide range of fields beyond this could become the preserve of an independently educated elite.
For a tiny fraction of the cost of independent school fees, we believe that Tiffin can continue to provide the excellent musical opportunities currently enjoyed by its pupils. Opportunities like these encourage pupils to look beyond narrow horizons, show them that the once impossible can be made possible, and encourage pupils to imagine, set and strive for ever higher goals.
By joining the Friends of Tiffin Music for just £35 pa (family membership) or £20 pa (individual membership), and by supporting the work of FoTM, you will be supporting some of the many activities which continue to make Tiffin not a basic but an excellent state education. Please complete a FoTM membership form, found on your chair, or available from the box office or bar, and hand it to a committee member or member of staff.
