Year 7 Beginner Bursaries

The purpose of beginner bursaries is to encourage pupils to take up an orchestral instrument and participate in one or more of the school's orchestras and bands, helping to sustain the tradition of orchestral and ensemble music making at Tiffin school.

Beginner bursaries are normally available to Year 7 pupils taking up one of the following orchestral instruments for the first time: Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Saxophone, Bassoon, Horn, Trumpet, Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba, Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass

  • Pupils are strongly encouraged to receive individual music lessons on one of the following orchestral instruments:

  • Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Saxophone, Bassoon, Horn, Trumpet, Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba, Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass

  • This will give pupils the best opportunity to participate in Tiffin's many instrumental ensembles, including orchestras, bands and chamber groups.

  • To give pupils access to the broadest repertoire of music for orchestra and band at school, the school's instrumental ensembles rely on the participation of pupils playing the full range of these orchestral instruments.

  • To encourage Year 7 pupils to take up one of the orchestral instruments listed above, and to participate in Tiffin's orchestras and bands, beginner bursaries are available only to pupils in Year 7 taking up an orchestral instrument for the first time.

  • The current value, terms, and conditions of beginner bursaries can be found on the Individual Music Lessons Enrolment Form and Terms and Conditions pages of this site.

  • Instrument loans may also be available to Year 7 pupils taking up these orchestral instruments. Further details can be found on the School Musical Instrument Loans page.

  • Pupils who receive a beginner bursary and/or use a loaned school instrument are expected to participate each week in one or more school ensembles following their first term of lessons. A full list of ensembles currently rehearsing each week at school can be found on the weekly music rehearsals page.

  • The purpose of beginner bursaries is to encourage pupils to take up one of the orchestral instruments listed above, participate in one or more of the school's orchestras and bands, and sustain the tradition of ensemble music making at Tiffin School.

  • This being so, beginner bursaries are not available to pupils taking up other, non-orchestral instruments not listed above.
