Artist Statement

The main idea that guided my artwork was negative space. Our prompt was to draw only the negative space which is basically like the shadow of something or the outline. In the first drawing, I was trying to show the color getting darker within the zentangle. In the second one, I was trying to show the negative space around my hands in two different positions. For the last drawing, I was showing the negative space around leaves and then I added a checkered background.

In the first drawing, I used a pen on the bristol board. For the second one, I used graphite on drawing paper. And for the last one, I used washable markers and a ballpoint pen on printmaking paper.

For the first peace, I looked up a picture of two hands touching like that and then traced them using a tracing board thing. Then I added the zentangles into the hands to show the light to dark. For the second one, I just put my hands into the positions I wanted to draw them in and just wung it. I just tried to draw my hands as I saw them and went with it. For the last one, I drew the leaves normally and then erased all the touching lines so that it would just be the negative space. Then I used a ruler to make lines half an inch apart to create the checkered pattern in the back.
