Sharpie and watercolor on bristol board

Artist Statement

The main idea that guided this artwork was making something creative out of the prompt "a cat on skies with a mouse on his helmet". This artwork was inspired a lot by the comics and artwork in The New Yorker as well as the illustrations in Roald Dahl's books. I was guided a lot by messy-looking cartoon drawings and the way the watercolor does not fit perfectly in the lines, for some reason I've always really liked that kind of art. I wanted to keep it neat and simple looking, despite the messy cartoon style.

This work was created with watercolor and skinny sharpie on watercolor paper. I chose these materials because those are what I used for my whatchamaDRAWit last year and I enjoyed using them together and how the final product came out last year. I am not sure what projects we are doing this year and what materials we will be using, so I jumped on the idea of being able to use sharpie and watercolor together again at least once.

The process of creating this work started with choosing what kind of style of art I wanted to do. I knew from the bat I didn't want to make it look realistic because I find I have less fun with art when trying to make it realistic. I started my drawing just sketching it out with a pencil and found myself erasing many things to make it look right. I then went over the pencil lines in sharpie and then in watercolor. I never completely started over, but I did have to take multiple attempts to get my cat just right.
