Artist Statement

The main idea that guided this work was creating a draw based on ink splotches on paper. I had three ink blotches all shaped in a messy circle towards the upper right-hand corner of the paper. If you look closely, you can see them as the heads of the birds. Birds were what guided this work because one of the ink splotches looked like the head and foot of a bird so I chose to run with that Idea. Because the ink splotches were all dark I had the idea to make the birds look like silhouettes against a sunset.

This work was made with marker and sharpie on drawing paper as well as the original ink splotches. I chose to use mostly markers because it is the very beginning of the year and I'm not yet familiar with the other art tools. Markers are something I've used since I was little and wanted to stick with something comfortable.

The process of creating this work started with about an hour of staring at a blank piece of paper covered in ink splotches. At one point I stood up and put it on the other side of my kitchen hoping that a different angle would inspire me. Sure enough, it did and I saw the foot and head of a bird. From there I went in with a pencil and sketched out the rest of the bird, as well as three other ones. I then drew a tree and a sun to add more of a background. I then went over the pencil with a sharpie to add the idea of a silhouette and drew the sky orange and sun yellow to make it look like a sunset.
