Limited Horizons, 9 x 12
The materials I used for my squiggle drawing were a pencil, a piece of paper with the squiggle on it, and colored pencils. To make my squiggle drawing I turned my paper till I saw something that I could use to create something. At first I started to draw a garden scene but I didn’t like how it turned out. Then I decided that I could create a scene with the squiggle as though one was looking into another world. I liked the scene I created so after I darkened some of the lines I added some color to make certain objects stand out a bit more.
In my squiggle drawing I used shape in most of my drawing such as the leaves and clouds. I also used color in the sunset and clouds to create contrast between the world within the squiggle and the space outside of it. I created a pattern with the leaves. I used lines to add texture to the girl’s hair and I used space by filling the space inside the squiggle and leaving the rest blank. Lastly, I created unity throughout the piece with the placement and balance of the objects within the drawing. I mostly only used softer shapes and lines and kept similar objects together in the piece.
The story that is evident in my drawing is that a girl is chained in an empty world while having to watch a world filled with color and life that is just barely out of reach. This relates to my life because the chains are like the boundaries I set for myself that keep me from exploring new ideas and experiences. They are the doubts and worries that keep me from leaving my comfort zone even when I want to. I am proudest of the chains because they turned out pretty proportional and organized. I struggled with coming up with an idea for beginning my drawing because I had elements that I wanted to include but I didn’t know to incorporate them.
