Three Views of a Shoe

Flowered Soles 9x12

Zoom and Crop 9x12

Abstract Shoe Drawing 9x12

To create this project I created my contour line drawing with a pencil, a piece of paper, and my right shoe. I made my drawing by studying my shoe and using a pencil to measure proportions to draw it. I started by drawing the sole of the shoe for the front and side view and with the toe for the top view. Once I finished the basic shape of the shoe I added the laces and the flower pattern around them. From there I zoomed in on a part of the laces which I found interesting. I zoomed in on the new drawing and then repeated the process again. To create my abstract shoe drawing, I chose the most interesting drawing from my zoom and crop drawings which was my second drawing. I then filled the different sections with patterns and scenes that complemented the different portions of the drawing. I used a pencil, colored pencils, and a ruler to create my abstract shoe drawing.

In my contour line drawing I used line to create the whole drawing and used different thicknesses to create contrast between different parts of the shoe. I created pattern on the shoe by keeping the same basic flower and leaf shapes for the design. I also used pattern in my abstract shoe drawing in some of the sections to contrast between the larger areas that were freer and abstract and the smaller areas that were more organized and planned out. I used space in my views of a shoe by drawing the shoe to fill most of the page and the space inside the shoe to emphasize the details like the flower pattern and the stitches. In my zoom and crop drawings I used line and space to show the smaller details of the shoe and its design. I used color to create unity within the abstract shoe drawing. I tied the piece together by having blue as the main color and then using warmer colors to emphasize different areas.

There wasn’t a story that was told by my three shoe drawings, my zoom and crop drawing, and my abstract shoe drawing. The thing I am most proud of in my views of a shoe drawing is the detail I put in the positioning of the laces. I struggled with the detail in the shape or outline of the shoe like the wrinkles especially when drawing the top view. I was able to capture more of the details by looking back at the other views of the shoe and seeing where the creases were mostly and how I had drawn them earlier. In my abstract shoe drawing the thing I am most proud of is the water droplets that I drew. They turned out much better than I first expected. In my zoom and crop drawing I struggled to draw the proportions correctly, however, I was able to make them a bit more precise by starting the drawing with a different part of the zoomed in area.
