Charcoal Drawing

For the charcoal drawings we were supposed to use a reference photo and recreate it using charcoal. We practiced using the charcoal to create a sphere using different values. To create the drawings we gridded the photo and our drawing paper. I used charcoal and white charcoal in the drawing.

I used value to create contrast such as between the skin color and the background. I used shape for the stairs and the wings. I created balance throughout the piece by using the white in all of it instead of using it just for the butterfly wings. I also used the white to create emphasis around the butterfly and the stairs.

I am proudest of my recreation of the pattern on the butterfly's wings. I struggled with drawing my fingers and keeping them a lighter shade than the background.
