Scratchboard

To create the scratchboard design we were asked to recreate a picture by creating different values with different scratching techniques/patterns. I used a scratchboard and a scratching tool to create the piece. I started with the outline of major shapes and then slowly built up the amount of scratches to make areas lighter. After the major shapes were drawn I added a simplified version of the background.

In this piece, I used line to create the major shapes like the cat and plants. I also used value to create contrast between the background and the leaves and the items in the flower pot. I used space and value to create balance in the piece by having attention drawn to certain areas, like the top leaves, and keeping the areas spread across the drawing.

I am proudest of my shading of the leaves and the choice to only shade a few to emphasize their shape. I struggled with shading the objects in the flowerpot and with making them stand out from the black background. However, I added more shading to the background of the pot to balance out the shading of the objects.
