Negative Space Leaf Drawing

To create my negative space leaf drawing I used leaves, a pencil, and watercolor paint. First I created my line drawing by tracing the leaves. Then I decided to outline them with warm fall colors. It looked too bland with only warm colors so I added sections of blue and purple in along with the standard leaf colors.

I used color to emphasize the negative space of the leaves. I used shape to draw the leaves and created balance by including hints of warm colors within the cooler sections and vice versa. I used space when placing the leaves so as to balance the piece and create contrast between the negative space and positive space.

There isn't a story in my drawing. I am most proud of the sectioning between the colors since they compliment each other well. I struggled with deciding how to emphasize the negative space of the leaves. Eventually I outlined the leaves with watercolor and then decided to section it off with different colors.
