3D Design

Final 3D Design Reflection

At the beginning of 3D design, I struggled since previously I had only worked with sketching and painting for the most part. I struggled the most with the first paper sculpture since I wasn't sure how to work with paper in a 3D sense to express my ideas. It was hard to step outside of my comfort zone in the beginning and learn to work with new materials like wax, clay, and plaster. I think my first few projects, like the relief and paper sculpture, show my uncertainty with the use of new materials. As I learned more about the materials I was using and found one that worked for me, my work became stronger as I experimented with different ways to express my ideas. As I learned more about using plaster I was able to incorporate things I had learned during earlier projects like the different ways one can use paper.

The project I am most proud of is my first sustained investigation. I used a bolder color (red) than I had in previous pieces. I also made it less busy with simpler elements so that the interaction between the hand and the heart would stand out. I experimented with using color as the main point that portrayed the story within the piece. Though I struggled with the first paper sculpture, the piece I had the most trouble with was the relief project. The struggle with the paper sculpture was mostly due to being in a new element and working to get out of the headspace of working with 2D designs. With the relief sculpture, I struggled to find inspiration and a material that I would enjoy working with. I also struggled with physically creating the piece because I found the wax harder to work with than I anticipated.

My artistic goals for the future are to experiment with new materials like metal, jewelry, and feathers to find more materials that I am comfortable working with that inspire me. I will also work to find more ways to use hands to portray storylines within my work and develop a style that people can tell is mine. This summer I plan to work more with embroidery and possibly try working with metal to create jewlery.
