Identity 3

Endless versions of myself, split off from that single choice

A different universe for each,

A different path with different hardships,

different losses,

Different people to fill their heart.

All bound by a single moment

A split decision

A choice

If you could see the paths before you, how could you choose?

Too many identities,

Which one true?

Our memories shape us,

Our souls become full.

Maybe it’s better to walk one path,

No longer lingering at each fork.

Let my heart guide me there,

With the first step I choose to take.

The idea that guided my work was to create a piece that portrayed identity using part of a poem that is part of my belief statement. The pencil hovering before a blank paper is meant to represent the moment before the first step, the moment when one is everything and nothing at the same time. They are a vessel that holds all the potential in the world and yet are nothing until they let it out.

The materials I used for this piece were watercolor and Blick alcohol markers. I used the markers for the majority of the piece. I used black watercolor for the outline/halo around the blank piece of paper.

The processes I used to create this work were practice and revision. I practiced drawing the hands and practiced shading with the markers. I then revised the layout of the tattoos on the hands and the way I was going to make the blank paper stand out from the background.
