Sgraffito Tile

To create the sgraffito tile, we were asked to create a design using different values using scratching techniques. I used a scratching tool and a clay tile with glaze on it to create my design. I used a scratchboard to create a draft of my tile design. Then, I recreated the design on the tile using the scratching tool.

In this piece I used line to create the shapes of the design like the hearts. I used space to create balance in the piece by distributing the elements of my design so that they are mirrored in the opposite corner of the tile. I emphasized the center of the piece with the value I used in the design.

I am proudest of my heart design because they are more detailed than the rest of the piece. I struggled with creating the smaller details like the thinner lines since the clay made it harder to be as precise. I ended up doing details in smaller chunks like drawing the lines in segments which made it easier to control.
