Artist statement-self portrait:

In this self-portrait, I definitely had some trouble trying to include things about me or things that actually look like me. Drawing myself or people in general, has never been my strong suit and this was no exception. In the end, I added a mask with lemons because lemon is one of my favorite flavors. I always want to include a piece of me in my artwork and this did just the trick. This project relates to my life by showing me that practice makes progress. I definitely think that my artwork really needed some more work and help but I think that even just practicing it started to make it better.

In this drawing, I only used a pencil. I used a 2H and a 2B pencil to create some dimension from just a single piece of paper. It was really interesting how you can make so many different layers with only 1 or 2 pencils. All you have to learn is how to shade.

Since I was only using a pencil for this artwork I was just sketching. I sketched with some guidelines for eyes, nose, and mouth. It was really helpful to be able to add details after just starting off with the base. I really think that if I had more time I would have added more details and fixed some of the wonky parts. For example, the eyes really needed some more detail to come alive and look more realistic. My next steps would be to learn how to shade to make the drawing look 3d and realistic. I really struggle with that currently and I think some guidance from a friend or teacher would be a good next step for me.

Artist statement-Room in a cube:

I really didn’t know how to draw with the perspective of the corner of a room which was really hard. In the end, the room just looked like a box but I really love interior design and I would really like to learn how to draw perspective. The things that look like rectangles on the side are supposed to be bookshelves going along the wall. You just can’t tell because there are no lines showing the perspective. Since I love the interior design I really wanted to add items that would make the room better. Therefore the dangles off the lamp were there. I think I need more practice and time learning perspective.

I only worked with a pencil for the drawing aspect but for tools, I used a ruler to make sure I was able to get straight lines. I think that this project was a little like sketching out designs for what architects do and I know that architects use rules often.

Since this was just a sketch I just started out by softly sketching out designs to then make darker. The project evolved after adding more and more. Such as chairs, tables, and bookshelves. I definitely need to work on making these things actually look like what their supposed to look like so my next step would be taught how so I can practice.

Artist statement-Shelf still life:

The Idea I was going after was always to choose something that represents or relates to me so when I chose the shelf I picked the most important things off of it and the things that would be easier to draw then maybe a ball jar. I would love to learn how to draw things like a ball jar but I’m not at that level yet.In my still life you see a water bottle, a card, and a plant pot with plants. These are all thing that sit on the shelf above my desk and are parts of my personality. I’ve always loved plants and doing photography with plants so I decided to make sure that this was added in. The card is a card from my 8th grade “graduation” and was special to me because of all the memories I had during my time at DCS and how I spent most of my childhood there. Lastly the water bottle is just something I always have. I love to workout and I love doing super active activities so I always have a water bottle with me.

In this project I used mostly just pencil but I really wanted to add a pop of color so I used watercolors as a base to then write words over it. Water colors are one of my favorite materials to work with because you can blend them to make such beautiful color combinations. I love that you can make a beautiful periwinkle blue by mixing purple and blue. I also used a ruler to create straighter lines for the card.

Started off with sketching once again for most of it but then for the card I used the water color base to explore adding pops of color. I added lots of curves to the straight lines to make it look like it was 3d (for the flower pot.) My project evolved mostly by adding more details. I was able to add many plants to the flower pot and for the card I was able to layer using watercolors and pencil. My next steps would be to try again but add even more detail and mke sure to refine it so it doesn’t look so messy.
