Artist Statement:

When we started by turning our original sketches into beautiful oops I noticed that my hair from my self-portrait reminded me of jellyfish tentacles. So I decided to turn the plants from the plant pot and the hair from my self-portrait into the tentacles. I also decided to use watercolors because it reminded me of the ocean. With watercolors, you are able to blend many colors to create a more realistic water effect. In this project, I really love the ocean and sea creatures so the Jellyfish reminds me of me. Also, the tentacles were based on my hair so that also relates to me.

I first started in pen because the start of the project was not supposed to be erased. I then went in after with a pencil to outline the “head” of the Jellyfish. When I knew that I liked the base I was able to go in with watercolors. I layered the watercolors to add dark and beautiful rich colors to create the ocean and lifelike effect.

Layering was the biggest process because I layered different colors of watercolor and pen to bleed into a wave-like effect. My project evolved when starting with pencil and pen I then started using colors. I haven’t used a lot of colors yet this year in the art class but I like being able to add colors to this one. My next steps would be to possibly add more instead of just adding jellyfish maybe I could add some other sea creatures and plants.
