Artist statement:

For this project, we were supposed to incorporate characteristics of the American flag and create a workpiece of our own. I decided to make three different races of women as drawings to show the unity that we strive to have in America. I wanted my work to be somewhat political so that it can represent our flag and our countries rights and ideologies. I decided to draw three faces while doing my best to look up unique features for different races and cultures. Obviously, they are not accurate but I did my best to represent different people.

For this project, I decided to use crayons and oil pastels so that I can blend. I think they are underrated materials because when you use a hairdryer you can heat up the areas and use your fingers to smudge/blend the materials and shades. I used a thicker piece of paper to make sure it didn't become extremely flimsy with the weight of the crayon wax.

If I were to do this project again I think I would want to try using charcoal for this project because it gives such a cool illustration and blending material. I also would maybe want to do a landscape of a famous American area or something. I really like the idea of having the stars and stripes though. I also really think doing a collage would be super cool with different materials. To revise this project I would probably try to smooth everything out. I think that is something I have to really work on in my art. Trying to make sure everything is smooth and cleaned up.
