Artist statement:
For this project, I knew I wanted to do something that reminded me of spring because it was the beginning of March. I had come up with many ideas for this project but because we had to use 84 shades I decided to go with a variety of greenery. I used both flowers and leaves for the plants. I was able to use a certain shade for each petal. At the end of the project, I used a variety of shapes like dots and teardrop shapes to fill some of the negative space. I also ended up deciding to write March on the painting itself because it represented the inspiration for the painting.
The materials I used in this painting were acrylic paint and canvas. I really liked using acrylic paint for this project because the paint was thick. That way I can use it to make texture or I can thin it down to make small details. I think it was a good idea to use the canvas instead of thick paper because the canvas was easy to maneuver and wouldn’t crinkle up or wrinkle like paper. I started with only blue, red, black, and white paint to mix all different colors. In total there were 84 colors needed and I ended up doing a few more. To make each color darker I would add a little bit of black but, if I wanted a color to get lighter I would add white.
I started with my background for this project then started layering each color on top. I did have to revise this project because I messed up a few steps in the beginning. I also did multiple sketches of how I thought I might want to put certain pieces or picture on this painting. If I were to do this project again I think I would chose something more interesting than plants and flowers. Instead I would do something more fun. I think it was hard to express a good project because I had to focus so closely on the shades of colors.
