Artist statement:

For this investigation project, I decided to focus on themes that we have had in fashion throughout history. Each of my three pieces for the investigation project will be based on the fundamentals of fashion and my first one is representing fashions history. The words in the background are materials found throughout history but are still used today. Or specific kinds of genres of fashion per se. A few of the things represent specific eras. The color of the polka dots represents the 70's, the sweatpants are a tribute to current times, the trench coat represents the late 1920's and 1930's where the great depression was present. They represent the hardships with different colored patches and lots of brown. 2 things commonly found in the Great depression. hats were popular back in the 1800s especially often with materials such as lace, pearls, sparkles, flowers, the whole thing. Overall the piece consists of many layers. This is supposed to bind the whole project together because in a literal and metaphorical way fashion has always consisted of many layers of clothing, or many genres and patterns.

Materials for this project were a wide range. My sketchbook pages consisted of markers, paint, pens, graphite even photographs printed off. I wanted to really experiment with materials and whatnot because fashion is all about taking unnecessary risks. The sketches were just on graphite and on bristle board because bristle board is really smooth. I didn't want anything too textured since I wasn't using paint or wet material of any kind. I ended up using photoshop for the final piece. Photoshop can do so much and I especially wanted to play around with colors for this project so I am glad about how that turned out.

Like I talked about in the first paragraph, this project is all about layers. My process started with research. I used websites and magazines to flip through timelines and ideas. I looked at colors and photographs. I printed off pictures and looked at things upside down and backward to fully consider a deep understanding of what I was working on. I used paper and graphite afterward to create my sketch. I had to revise a couple of pieces from the research brainstorm log for the whole look to make sense. Finally, I used photoshop to create the final piece. I used layers of text and other drawings in different places. To everyone, the piece of art might not make sense. But it has a story and it is also a piece of art where you can make your own.
