Midterm Project

Artist statement:

For our midterm project, we were asked to take a 4x5 grid of squares and use our creativity to create a project. Now, I'm not going to lie, at first I was pretty stumped for what I wanted to do. Recently I was daydreaming over pictures of Greece because I really want to go there for vacation and I noticed that I could make an art project out of the idea of places I want to travel to. I decided that each circle could be a new destination with a new design. I want to use markers to create brightly colored pictures and locations. I wanted to incorporate different parts of the term, "culture" in each picture. Whether it was maybe a food, specific place, animal, or plant that is known for that area. We were supposed to show our creativity in this project and I wanted to try to do something for the background. So, I decided to use a black and white sort of abstract leaf design. I wanted it to be black and white so that it didn't take away from the destination circles themselves. I didn't want to fill the entire background either because it would be too busy, this way it is just busy enough.

For this project, I used markers as my main material. These were specifically Chameleon Markers which is one of my favorite brands. Their unique insides allows them to create ombre strokes from light to dark or from color to color. This allows for cool marker shading techniques which while I didn't use them in my specific project, I did appreciate the wide range of color choices with the markers.

I did some research looking at main landmarks or famous parts of each place but mostly I know from growing up learning about different cultures and places. I started with my sketch and led into the marker portion after. Lots of revisions when sketching. It's harder to sketch a graph than you would think. If I were to try this project again, I would want to try using the circles to create one specific project or drawing. I feel like I could create a cool art piece by incorporating all the circles together like a mosaique. Overall, I like how my travel destinations turned out.
