Artist statement:

For this project we had to make an editorial cartoon. At first I wanted mine to be political but I after a while I had a hard time coming up with an idea that was creative and powerful but appropriate. So, this past week was the start of hunting season and I wanted to spread awareness about hunting. My family does not hunt and I have to say I see a lot of things wrong with hunting. I think that this is a topic that it not talked about often and I thought it would be an interesting topic to do my editorial cartoon on.

For my materials I used graphite and paper to sketch out my idea in detail. Next I put the photo into photoshop to create the final project. I used lots of different colors mostly warm colors because I wanted the warmth and coolness of fall to both come into the picture. I tried to add texture as well using different shades of colors and different kinds of lines, dots, or shapes. Photoshop worked really well for this project. I liked all the tools you can use and this time I played with brush sizes.

My process for this piece of work was layering. There are certain background layers, mid ground, and for ground layers in the picture and I wanted to make sure that nothing was overlapping in a strange way. I tried to look at proportion and make it less realistic since it is a cartoon and it's not supposed to be realistic. I had a hard time coming up with the words that the deer was saying but I think that the facial expression and speech bubble kind of shows what I am trying to do with out being to forward or "in your face".
