Artist statement:

For this project we first had to create a collage and then a painting based on the collage. To create my collage used magazines I found around the house. I tried to choose some with many advertisements because I noticed that most advertisements had the most options for objects. I have to say though, there was no real vision for this picture. Most times you want it to turn out a certain way but for me I decided that I’d just have to see how it turns out as we go along. I cut out pictures that I liked with colors that I liked and placed them on my piece of paper. In the end it was an abstract collage meant to not show anything in particular. For the painting I knew it was going to be hard to paint some of the pictures. Such as the Koala, the koala contained too many small details. I decided to take that out of the picture and instead move the dragon fruit. That made it so everything was more spread out. I also decided to leave out the letters. They were kind of confusing because they didnt mke up any word inparticular and they made it harder to add in details of the other objects.

For the materials in the college it was magazines such as better homes and gardens and Martha Stweart living. They gave lot’s of options for different kinds of pictures such as food, greenery, and objects. I also had a pad of different print papers so I used the print paper to make the background. The colors worked for the rest of the theme so it ended up being a good fit. For the painting I used acrylic paint. I only started with red, blue, yellow, white, and black. Then I mixed the rest of the shades, tints, and tones. It was pretty easy mixing this time except for the browns. The different brown shades was hard by far.

The process of making the work was a little bit different than others because we were copying something. Oftentimes we are not able to copy. So, it was important to have patience and take the time to match colors and cut out the right pictures. I also had to revise my plan on the painting. I couldn’t just paint instead I had to look over which of the collage I could paint and which would be too complicated. For example the Koala. In this project the most important things were to understand the different angles and shades in each picture. If I were to do it again I would probably try painting a different collage.
