Following half term, it’s time to get back into college work. This half term is very much focused on applications, primarily for universities but industry work as well. Fahmida gave us time to discuss any films and shows we’d watched over the break. I spent a lot of time researching when the apprenticeships I’m interested in are opening. For the BBC production coordinator apprenticeship, applications open on the 16th/ 17th November and there is currently no information as to what must be submitted. I already have a CV, Cover letter and show reel prepared but I will also use the content of this half term’s application module to my advantage. Tuesday was mainly an empty day and I spent the evening watching more content to immerse myself in film.
Moving to Wednesday, Attila gave us a lecture on juxtaposition which was a good refresher and started a discussion in class. He gave us a lot of time to work on the assignment brief and asked us to research two jobs/ university courses that contrast. I looked into a startup job and a runner, likely to be where I jump into the industry, and a highly experienced film producer position, which is where I would like to end up. The essential differences were the level of experience, salary and control but the hours of work within the industry seem to be consistent in their chaos. Most likely, these jobs will be 6 day weeks with varying times. I believe a producer must be more constant to the project whereas runners could float between projects. Being a runner is all about making connections and learning the way things work on the job. In the next year, I would like to refine my skill set in production with an apprenticeship but if that didn’t work out I would be willing to jump straight in as a runner. Either way, my intention is to build valuable connections that will challenge me and open more doors in the future.
Before we move onto Friday, Thursday was a great day for my personal growth and partially restored my motivation. I’ve been struggling to stay on course mentally for a long time now and I’ve finally decided to do something about it by getting out on the internet through YouTube to create videos about things I’m interested in, building up my portfolio while doing something I enjoy and I hope others get something out of as well. On Thursday, I began by giving myself 12 hours to script, film, edit and release a redo of my ‘Intro to Me’ video from the first assignment last year. I’ve been wanting to make this for a while as a lot has changed/ moved on in my life and it was quite therapeutic to recreate the video with better quality footage and editing on a limited time scale. If all goes to plan, I’m going to recreate this video yearly. The response to it from classmates, friends, family and others online has been great and hopefully over the next few years I can build up a constant stream of followers.
On Friday, we were down many people from the class which allowed us all to work on a group exercise together. Continuing with the theme of adaptation, we used the first lesson to watch and discuss a variety of adaptations of Shakespeare’s Macbeth, ranging from stage performances to a world war retelling to a truthful period piece. This was great to present the limitless methods of adaptation and made me think more about my own adaptation of a Midsummer Night’s Dream that I aim to fully film soon. After a self-study lesson where I worked on my power point presentation and comparison between apprenticeship schemes, we worked as a class with Attila to recreate the opening scene of Macbeth with three students in an empty classroom as the witches, following an outline script. We each wrote and discussed the shot types we needed before being given roles in the production team to film it. I was sound operator so checked the levels and input on the Kinefinity camera before operating the boom mic. We were using a professional lighting set up and were able to shoot what we were looking for with great sound quality. Hopefully next week, we can extract the footage and I can edit something together for my portfolio. Below are a series of photos from this exercise. In the evening, I released another video on YouTube, this time being my year one show reel that I made a couple of months ago but hadn’t released publically yet. This week has been quite straight forward and free. I need to make sure I focus on my in college work as well as my efforts on my own projects to hit the deadlines.
