I believe it is important for my portfolio to detail my experience traveling to the Jamboree as this will provide some background into why I’ve chosen this topic to explore. Through doing this primary research, I aim to find which areas my documentary should focus on in the narrative it will tell. This account will tell an overview of the event from my, as a young person, perspective at ground level without any research or news articles to back it up.

Looking back over the event to refresh my memory and allow you to understand the angle I’m approaching this will be really useful in finding the lens for my story. The next stage from this is to find others who would be happy to tell their stories, both familiar and new to me. I aim to talk to many people from my unit to form the bulk of the documentary as I can draw questions relevant to them as their experience was like my own. This will form an ‘in person’ interview scheme.
As well as this, I wish to reach out both nationally and globally to find alternative accounts of the event. Writing this account, while reminding me of the time I had and provoking thoughts of the wider Jamboree, has allowed me to see how little of the Jamboree I actually saw the heart of. I would only briefly cross paths with people and hear anecdotes, not the whole picture.
Two areas I am very interested in trying to interview are members of UK Unit 84 Birmingham as, as far as I am aware from passing some of them on site, they had the worst conditions to deal with out of UK Units, including not having a campsite due to floods, many hospital cases and more.
To cover an international appeal, I would also like to talk to friends I made from Australia that I spent some time with on site. Australian scouting is set up through different sections and development. I was also aware that the Jamboree fell in the middle of their school year, not summer holidays so that impacted the time they could stay in the country.
Between these three unit accounts, Bucks Unit 56, Birmingham Unit 84 and Australia Unit 2, I should gain a wider picture of the event that the documentary can cover, while also being manageable for this project. I will also reach out generally in the off chance that others from different units both nationally and international would want to pitch in.

For my primary research, I started with a survey targeted at anyone who went on the Jamboree. After posting the form on my social media, I was shocked days later to find that 110 people nationally and internationally of all attending age groups had submitted response. This inclined to 151 after a push to UK IST (over 18+ service team) a week later. I am very grateful for the responses and it presented to me how valuable this experience was and how much people were still willing to talk almost a year later. It made me realize that covering this event in a documentary would go beyond just my FMP.
For the FMP, I must cut down the details I’ve found to create a concise piece that can be presented to moderators rather than hours of content that would slow their proceedings. I must also thank friends from my unit and that I met on the Jamboree for spreading this survey around their contacts and group chats as I wouldn’t have achieved this many responses on my own. However, this has now given me the mammoth task of extract information that can be used to inform the direction of my documentary or even appear as text with voice over on screen when discussing a certain element.
In this analysis, I will break down the responses question by question to give an overall verdict of each. I may single out entries due to countries or age disparities. Below, you can find the full survey.

Conclusion
From this survey, I have conducted global primary research and gained a greater understanding of the event past my own perception. It was validating that the points I previously raised in my primary account have been carried forth here, meaning the documentary will gain a clear overall vision. I aim to state the negatives in terms of site conditions, weather and unpredictability but also celebrate the event and what young people were able to achieve through it, a gap in the media.
The next step from here is to move on from this primary research and look online for secondary articles and news accounts, footage that can be used as an archive in the film. I now aim to research the history and development of scouting, focusing on the first Jamboree, first South Korean Jamboree and previous Jamboree in America 2019 to compare the situations.
While away, I conducted a podcast which acts as a primary research account into the event. This is a 10 episode series that I ran along with conducting media for my unit.
