As usual, I spent the weekend recording behind the scenes with RGS Shrek and have spent spare time during the week editing promo clips from their rehearsals. I have been able to record cast and production team interviews which will work towards my planned documentary. On Monday, as setup for my time in college this week, I began compiling research about director Damian Chazelle. By the end of the week, I wanted to have mazimised this research and completed my first research paper, purely about Chazelle, before simultaneously working on pre production documents and my film case study essays next week.
On Tuesday, Fahmida was still ill, allowing me to continue my research efforts. I’ve learnt that my preferred method of researching is watch videos so I’ve found every interview on Chazelle’s films and personal life to get my information from his mouth directly, which secures its credibility. My list of notes are below as well as on my assignment page with the combined research paper.
Wednesday changed the trajectory of the week as Attila put myself and Jacob forward to co-direct social media promos for Marlow Film Studios. They wanted to compile videos of young people who want to get into the film industry talking about their background, challenges in life, current studies and futre plans. I spent the day putting together my crew, including music tech students, and devising a schedule and interview questions. When I was able to, I also continued my research. I’m was now at a comfortable stage to write the research paper.
Thursday, as usual, became my YouTube day, this week scripting, filming and editing a review of Wonka, one of four films I saw at the cinema this weekend gone (Poor Things, Wonka, Anything But You, One Life). I have also moved more into creating shorter social media content to spread awareness of my channel. Hopefully I will go viral soon but to get there I must continue releasing a flow of content.
Friday was our first day of interviews for Marlow. For this shoot, we were on our Amersham campus but next week will have a second day at Aylesbury for a wider set of courses. Over the day, we conducted ten interviews (6 film and TV, 2 CGI, 2 Music Tech) which was more then required for those courses. We had a four camera setup, two landscape cameras and two portrait phones to allow for a variety of uses. I essentially produced and assistant directed by calling timings and interviewees of the day while Jacob conducted the interviews by asking questions. Mattie and Charlie from music tech provided their equipment and gave me one less thing to worry about. We also collected some behind the scenes footage. Each set of interviews were in a location that suited the course and this is a direction we will continue at Aylesbury. From this experience, I gained time working in a team which developed my confidence and leadership. I realised I need to spend more time getting to know my camera but this isn’t a priority as I am pursuing a line of producer and possibly assistant directing. I may ask Korben to be cinematographer for my FMP as we work well together and it gives both of us the benefit of working in a larger crew. Overall, this week, I haven’t completed everything I wanted to for the assignment but I gained worth while experience with interviewing that will sit well on my CV. I am grateful to Attila for giving me this opportunity.
